Villa Shamira
Completed in 1990, Villa Shamira was the second western-design villa to be built in Canggu village. Back then, the property had open views across endless rice fields all the way to the black-sand beach. Despite inevitable development – no doubt accelerated by its proximity to world-class surf and to hip, vibrant Seminyak – Canggu is still a peaceful seaside community.
Villa Shamira is not just another Bali rental property or showcase villa; rather it is a genuine family residence that has evolved with the local community over the years and now offers an idyllic home-from-home holiday experience for extended families and groups of friends. Well-thumbed books line shelves, original photos hang on the walls and long-serving local staffs welcome guests warmly: you can almost sense the years of laughter and happiness reverberating throughout the house.
This four- bedroom residence (plus additional lumbung bedroom), set in lush tropical gardens, belies its age and has been thoughtfully updated with modern comforts and luxuries as it has matured. Contemporary tropical Asian influences – timelessly stylish yet informal and comfortable – complement the villa’s solid western architecture. There are so many inviting indoor–outdoor living spaces at Shamira, including several dining areas, hidden patios and a poolside balé (gazebo), that it’s quite a challenge to fully enjoy them all.
These, along with its charming bedrooms and a centre-stage 12m swimming pool surrounded by a sociably- sized stone pool deck, make Villa Shamira ideal for entertaining in style and lounging in luxurious comfort.

Villa Shamira is located on a small lane straddling two beach roads. A pleasant stroll of under ten minutes along either road brings you to Canggu Beach. The road to the left (Jalan Batu Balong) takes you to Canggu Beach ‘proper,’ frequented mostly by locals, especially at dusk, and providing only simple food outlets. However, just before you reach the beach, you’ll find the divine Hotel Tugu, one of Bali’s most celebrated hotels, with excellent restaurants and a fascinating and charming bar area.
The road to the right of Villa Shamira (Jalan Batu Mejan) leads to Echo Beach, a long-time surfer’s haunt that increasingly caters to visitors with spas, boutiques and a diverse range of eateries. A circular walk – particularly lovely at sunrise or sunset – takes you along the beach and past an ancient temple built from coral where Hindu ceremonies invariably spill out onto the beach.
- Sports enthusiasts should head to Bali’s prestigious Canggu Club, with its state-of-the-art gym and tennis and squash courts. It’s just ten minutes away and Villa Shamira kindly provides complimentary guest membership. Reward your work-outs with some gourmet goodies at the nearby Canggu Deli.
- A string of naturally wild beaches, some renowned for their great surf, are all within relatively easy access. Canggu Beach, is only ten minutes by foot. A little further along, The Beach House (or Echo Beach Bar-Restaurant), boasts a marvelous open-air terrace, ideal for watching sunsets over the sea, and with live music at weekends. It’s a popular place, so wise to book ahead.
- If you’ve always wanted to gallop along a beach or ride through villages bordered by rice fields, Bali Horse Adventure, located a few minutes from the villa, can arrange horse riding tours, as well as children’s riding lessons and romantic horse-drawn carriage outings.
- Bali’s first museum-hotel, Hotel Tugu Bali, is just a short stroll from the villa. This boutique beachside sanctuary comes studded with priceless Indonesian artworks and antiques and has an award-winning spa offering age-old, Eastern therapies.
- Fashionistas, trendies and shop-a-holics should hot-foot it down to Bali’s most cosmopolitan enclave, Seminyak, a twenty-five minute drive south. Here, you can indulge in the glut of global-inspired gourmet restaurants, stylish boutiques and hipper-than-thou bars – including much hyped Ku Dé Ta, on Seminyak beachfront.
- Drive westwards to explore the unchartered West Bali region, where charming Tabanan Regency reveals terraced rice fields of emerald green, volcanic mountains and black sand beaches dotted with fishing communities – treasures that Bali is famed for.
- For a day of culture and dramatic landscapes, drive directly north from the villa to the mountain town of Bedugal. From here, explore three volcanic lakes, including Bratan, with its photogenic and stunningly positioned Pura Ulun Danu – one of Bali’s most important temples.
